The novelists Anthony Trollope and Flan O Brien, playwrite and author Brendan Behan, explorer Sir Ernest Henry Shakelton, inventer of the pneumatic tyre John Boyde Dunlop, inventer of the wirless Marconi (his house is on the grounds of the state broadcaster RTE) and ex president Eamon de Valera.

The river Dodder runs through Donnybrook. It is popular with amateur fishermen and boasts a multitude of wildlife.
